Senior journalists come under fire

LAHORE - Two unidentified culprits, on a motorcycle, fired gunshots on two veteran journalists and staff reporters of Nawa-i-Waqt Group here near Aitchison College on The Mall in the Race Course Police limits Wednesday night. However, luckily they survived the attack. Lahore Press Club council member and former secretary Shoaib Uddin alias Chachu and Ashraf Chaudhary while talking to TheNation described both the culprits to be between 18 to 22 years and were riding pillion on a motorbike. They fired a gunshot on us but luckily it missed both of us and went through the space between the two front seats after piercing through the windscreen of the car, they pointed out. They said that they had just left the Nawa-i-Waqt office on Shaarey Fatima Jinnah and were going home. They fired with the intention to kill one or both of us but by the grace of Allah Almighty we remained unhurt, they elaborated. According to them, they were completely ignorant about the accused, their whereabouts and who they were and their motives behind this criminal act. After this incident, we peacefully continued driving our car and reached our homes. Now we have submitted a formal application against unidentified accused, Ashraf Chaudhry added. Meanwhile, Lahore Press Club (LPC) President Sarmad Bashir, Vice President Aamir Waqas Chaudhry, LPC Secretary Zia Ullah Khan Niazi, Treasurer Ansar Hussain and members of the governing body condemned the incident. They said that such attacks on journalists bore enough testimony to the failure of the government. We are professional journalists and such cowardly attacks can not deter us from discharging our duties with dedication and honesty, they added. The LPC office-bearers demanded the government to take a stern action against the culprits. Meanwhile, the Racecourse Police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident.
