Pakistan, India DGMOs make hotline contact over border clashes

ISLAMABAD- With tension rising along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary, the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan spoke on a hotline, military sources told a private news channel today.

The official said Pakistani army's DMO conveyed the country's concern to his Indian counterpart and pointed towards the neighboring country's consistent, unprovoked firing on the civilian population living along the LoC and the working boundary.

Today's was the first ever registered contact between the two armies since tensions flared on the LoC and the working boundary.

More than 12 people have been killed and 54 others injured in Indian firing along the LoC and Working Boundary over the past two weeks. Unprovoked Indian firing has triggered an exodus of people from the villages near the LoC and Working Boundary.

Exchanges of sporadic fire are common along the de facto border dividing the region despite a ceasefire pact signed in 2003 but the extent and intensity of the latest violence and the number of civilian deaths is unusual.

Just yesterday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had said that the two neighbors ‘can only gain through dialogue.’
