Govt fails to provide special Eid funds

KARACHI - Around 7 million displaced people of Sindh celebrated Eidul Fitr in the relief camps without any special support from the government. The government also failed to fulfil its commitment to provide Rs20, 000 per family as announced by it, a few days ago before the Eid. The distribution of special Eidi fund could have enabled the displaced and desperate families to celebrate Eid with a little financial ease. According to reports majority of the IDPs living in relief camps remained deprived of the relief aid during the Eid days. The IDPs, which were lucky enough to be present at the camps chosen by the political leaders to visit, could get Eid gifts and relief items. President Asif Ali Zardari reached Razaqabad relief camp on Eid day, where he met with the IDPs and distributed Eid gifts among them. Senate Chairman Farooq H Naeq, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and other high ups accompanied him. However Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, provincial ministers, political leaders and NGOs activists also distributed Eid gifts and food among the people living at a few relief camps on Eid day. CM Sindh offered Eiful Fitr prayers at Garhi Khuda Bux with the provincial ministers and party workers. After offering Eid prayer, he met with the IDPs and distributed the Eid gifts among them. On this occasion, Sindh CM said around 7 million people had been affected due to devastating floodwaters. He said that data of the flood-affectees people of Sindh had been communicated to the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other donor countries, which were helping the Pakistan in flood destruction. Chief Minister said that Rs40 million was released to each flood affected district through DCOs for provision of initial help prior to Eid. CM also said that Council of Common Interest (CCI), which met with Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani in the chair, last week at Islamabad, a decision was taken to distribute Rs20, 000 (with equal participation of Rs10,000 by Federal and Provinces) to each flood affected family through 'Watan Card. Qaim Ali Shah said that all out efforts were being made to provide cooked food and Eid gifts to the people of flood affected areas. CM claimed that the rescue operation was a success and the losses of lives remained minimum due to the same. However heavy losses were faced by farmers due to destruction of agriculture yields e.g. cotton, sugarcane, and other crops in the province. In order to provide temporary relief to affected growers Sindh government has decided to provide free seeds and fertilizer for upcoming Rabi crops season to the growers having up to 25 acres of land, CM said. He said a survey was being carried out for the rehabilitation of flood affectees and the construction of their houses in their respective areas. CM also said that thousands of the cattle heads were washed away in floodwaters and the government would pay compensation to the owners of livestock. CM Qaim Ali Shah also visited Nausheroferoze, Nawab-shah, Matiari, Hyderabad and Jamshoro districts, where he monitored the relief activities during Eid days. The IDPs disgruntled with the relief aid are returning back to their destroyed homes, most of which are still under floodwaters.
