CEC’s Karachi office ransacked, laptop stolen


KARACHI - The office of Chief Election Commissioner Fakhurddin G Ebrahim’s son was attacked and ransacked by unknown persons at Clifton in the city on Sunday.
According to the police, the attackers ransacked the office of the CEC’s son, vandalising and breaking the doors and windows, and took away a laptop, Rs 40,000 and other material.
Fakhruddin G Ebrahim usually sits in the office of his son at Clifton in Karachi. The Election Commission confirmed the incident, but claimed no sensitive information or documents had been stored in the laptop.
According to Clifton SP Sarfraz Nawaz, some people attacked the office of the son of the chief election commissioner, vandalised it and broke its doors and windows.
He made it clear that the laptop taken away by the attackers belonged to an employee of the son of the chief election commissioner. The attackers also took away Rs 40,000 and other equipment and material of the office, he added.
The SP Clifton reached the spot and conducted the initial inquiry. Media reports say the Election Commission of Pakistan confirmed the attackers had taken away the laptop from the office of the chief election commissioner. South Karachi Deputy Commissioner Jamal Mustafa Kazi, however, told reporters that investigation into the incident was in process. He said the attackers ransacked the office of the son of the chief election commissioner in Clifton.
Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: Prime Minister Justice (r) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso on Sunday took serious notice of the reports about disappearance of a laptop computer from the office of the Chief Election Commissioner in Karachi.
The Prime Minister also sought a report from the authorities concerned over the incident. He also directed the ministry of interior and provincial governments to beef up security and provide adequate protection to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The prime minister also expressed his concern over the incident of an attack on the office of ECP in Kalat and asked the Balochistan government to submit a comprehensive report in this regard.
