Anti-polio campaign starts in Balochistan

QUETTA - Three-day anti-polio campaign will start here on Monday (today) across Balochistan and over 2234425 children below the age of five years would be vaccinated.
“About 6095 teams comprising health workers and volunteers have been formed to start the campaign,” Dr Ghaffar Lashari stated this while addressing a news conference.
He said that that polio was a fatal disease and it had almost been controlled in other parts of the world but Pakistan was among Nigeria and Afghanistan where polio disease had not been fully eradicated despite the strenuous efforts of the government and international donor agencies.
“From last year 198 polio cases have been reported in Pakistan and 73 from Balochistan but this year, only three cases has been reported in provincial capital”, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Abdul Wahab of WHO said that teachers, notables and religious scholars should sensitise the parents about the crippling nature of the disease.
“Educated segments of the society should also play their role and should coordinate with the health teams and vaccinate their children below the age of five against the polio disease,” he added.
