Govt, Opp to foil conspiracies against democracy

LAHORE - The government as well as coalition partners and political parties in the Parliament have started establishing contacts with one another with a view to combating undemocratic activities and rumours about establishment of national government. The government and the Opposition, especially PML-N, in their high-level contacts have agreed to further strengthen democratic system while vowing they would foil every conspiracy to undermine the democratic set-up. Talking to Nawa-i-Waqt, the highly-placed sources in the PML-N expressed serious reservations over the governments policies, stressing that they would make efforts to correct the current political course and at the same time pledging that PML-N would not become part of undemocratic and unconstitutional forces. The sources concerned regretted the fact that undemocratic government especially army generals caused a heavy loss to Pakistan. They stressed they would not lend any direct or indirect support to any such move, wishing the democratic govt to complete its constitutional tenure. When quizzed about mid-term polls, they maintained they had never demanded mid-term elections formally but if the government considers it proper to contact the public, then they are ready for mid-term polls. On the other hand, the PPP government is fully aware of the rumours vis-a-vis undemocratic change and according to a federal minister, the rumour-mongers seeking national government formation or undemocratic change are the same people who want to rule the country with the help of undemocratic forces and army generals. According to PPP sources, all the institutions are working within their constitutional limits, and the government and Parliament are making decisions in the best interest of the country. Therefore, those people wanting to rule the country through illegal ways would not succeed, they added. They maintain as there is no such voice in the Parliament or outside, therefore those wishing mid-term polls would not succeed in establishing their designs and they have to wait till next general elections. It has also been learnt that the government and the Opposition parties through mutual contacts have decided that federal and provincial governments would play their due role and actively participate in activities for rehabilitation of flood affectees and would maintain coordination with respect to distribution of aid to affectees. Meanwhile, the meeting of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif with JI leaders is being regarded a step forward in this direction.
