MQMs support to Haideri lacks significance: PML-N

ISLAMABAD - The opposition group in the Senate led by Senator Ishaq Dar of PML-N believes that the extending support to Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri by MQM at this juncture would be of no significance as the party was not part of the electoral college of opposition benches at the time when Haideri was appointed Leader of the Opposition. PML-N and its allies in the Senate are of the view that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) can not extend its support to Maulana Haideri of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) right now as the ruling of Chairman Senate in the controversy over the slot of Leader of Opposition in the Upper House is awaited and MQM could play its role once the ruling in the matter would be handed down. Ishaq Dars opposition group represented by seven parliamentary groups in the house asserts that Chairman Senate Farooq H Naek should first give his ruling keeping in view the electoral college of the opposition benches that was at the time when Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri was appointed for this slot. MQM joined the opposition benches after Chairman had appointed Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as Leader of the Opposition while deciding the fate of two applications separately submitted in the Senate Secretariat, one by Ishaq Dar of PML-N and other by JUI-F Maulana Haideri, both were the contenders for the slot of leader of the opposition. The legislators belonging to this group emphasise that Chairman should decide the controversial appointment issue on the basis of these two applications and not considering the number of MQM legislators who later joined the opposition benches. The house has already held a detailed legal debate on the appointment of opposition leader during its last sitting. MQM on Friday filed an application carrying signatures of all its six senators in support of Haideri as Leader of the Opposition. Professor Khurshid Ahmed, a senior lawmaker of the Upper House belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) said that Chairman should decide the issue on the basis of the votes that were cast once the vacancy for the leader of the opposition had fallen vacant.
