ISLAMABAD - The Friday cleansing activity of the site of demolished Jamia Hafza by the hundreds of students of famous Lal Masjid following an announcement made by the chief cleric of the mosque Maulana Abdul Aziz that foundation stone of religious seminary would be re-laid soon, recalled the tragic memories of gory operation 'Sunrise in the minds of the residents of the federal capital. It was right after the Friday prayers held at the Lal Mosque, when Maulana Abdul Aziz led hundreds of students of Lal Masjid to the site of adjoining demolished Jamia Hafza and removed bushes and stones from there, besides declaring that foundation stone of the mosque would be laid on next Friday. We are going to do it on our own, as the city administration is reluctant to reconstruct the seminary despite the mosque administration possesses courts orders in this regard, Maulana Aziz was quoted as saying by a spokesperson of the seminary. Jamia Hafsa was built in Islamabad in 1992. Its foundation stone was laid down by Maulana Muhammad Abdullah, the father of Maulana Abdul Aziz. A series of incidents on the part of seminary students and administration occurred in year 2007 those led to launch of operation 'Sunrise in which Jamia Hafza and Lal Masjid were completely destroyed. Jamia Hafza caught the attention of national and international media on February 21, 2007, when seminary students occupied a childrens public library. The occupation was said to be due to the demolition of mosques in the capital by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) due to their illegal construction on encroached land and alleged security risk.Later, on March 28, 2007, a brothel house in the locality was raided by female students from the madrassa, the owner of the house, her daughter and her daughter-in-law were abducted by the students and held hostage at the madrassa. Later, Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa students raided a Chinese massage centre in Sector F-8/3 and took hostage five Chinese nationals, including three women and two men. Two vehicles full of seminary students among them several armed raided the massage center, abducted staff and brought them to the mosque. The Jamia Hafsa administration alleged that a brothel was being run under the garb of a massage centre. Two policemen were also abducted after two female madrassa teachers were arrested in connection with the raid on Chinese massage centre. The policemen were later released in return for the teachers. In April 2007, Maulana Abdul Aziz announced that a Qazi court composed of ten Lal Masjid Muftis would henceforth enforce sharia law. He also declared democracy as an evil system. In May 2007, baton-wielding students from a mosque associated with the movement took four police personnel as hostages, demanding the release of ten associates who had been arrested by law enforcement agencies. This kind of controversy finally led to the siege of the Jamia Hafsa and Lal Masjid started on July 3, 2007. Lal Masjid was in constant conflict with authorities in Islamabad for 18 months prior to the military operation.
