ISLAMABAD – A National Accountability Bureau executive board meeting after lengthy deliberations late on Wednesday decided not to file references in the rental power projects (RPPs) scam on the grounds of insufficient evidence, a source privy to this development said.
The NAB would submit a progress report on Thursday (today) before the Supreme Court with regards to the RPPs cases. NAB Chairman Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari will appear before the court in this regard.
The meeting, which started in the evening under the chair of Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari, was attended by all senior NAB officers, including its prosecutor general.
The meeting separately discussed the two RPPs cases in which 16 and 22 persons, respectively, have been accused. Besides Prime Minster Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and former finance minister Shaukat Tareen, a number of federal secretaries have been accused in the two cases.
According to sources in the NAB, the executive board, in its meeting, decided that the evidence against the accused was insufficient, and thus references could not be filed. The NAB media wing however did not make public the minutes of the meeting due to the unknown reasons.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the NAB to undertake all the necessary steps during the course of the day and submit investigation reports to the authorities concerned and get approved the challans/references against the accused persons in order to cause their arrest without any hesitation. The court called a progress report from the NAB on Thursday (today).
