Rangers policing powers to be extended, says Malik

ISLAMABAD (Agencies) - Interior Minister Rehman Maik has said the police powers given to Rangers would be extended for as long as they required it, and every possible step will be taken to maintain peace in Karachi. Speaking to the media outside the PIMS Hospital on Friday, Malik said: We made this decision with DG Rangers, Home Minister, Chief Minister and the IGP to ensure that the Rangers face no hurdle in across-the-board action. The Interior Ministry would extend their authority for however long they required it. Also on Friday, while talking to reporters outside Parliament House, the interior minister said that the Evidence Act would be amended for ensuring prompt punishment to the target killers. He thanked the Supreme Court for taking suo moto notice of Karachi situation, saying the decision of the apex court would be implemented. He said that on the directive of the apex court he was constantly monitoring the situation and holding daily meetings on Karachi situation on the directive of the prime minister. He said a number of target killers and extortionists have been arrested in Karachi. Refusing to talk about allegations levelled by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, he said he will not talk about Dr Zulfiqar Mirza. If the release of a single target killer on my recommendations is proved, Im ready for any punishment. If summoned, I will tell the facts to PPP leadership or judicial commission. He maintained that he never telephoned any target killer nor was anyone released on his orders. He said if this allegation is proved, he should be hanged at a square. Malik said that incompetent persons resign and he was not incompetent. He said that he does not have any link with any terrorist organisation but he has links with MQM, which is a political party. Malik revealed that two to three groups of Taliban in Fata have conceded that they were being blackmailed by certain groups. Wafaqul Madaris was being contacted for the return of disgruntled Taliban groups, he said, adding that the government would announce pardon for the repenting Taliban groups, if they were not involved in major terrorist acts. Criticising militants, he said that some terrorists elements wanted to destroy Pakistan and its youth but the democratic government would foil their nefarious designs. He said militants who were defeated in Malakand were now carrying out attacks from Afghan side of the border.
