Six die as rain, thunderstorm wreak havoc in Chiniot

CHINIOT - At least six people were killed and more than 70 house damaged in severe thunderstorm and heavy rains that lashed the district here on Sunday. The rain paralysed life and inundated various localities in urban and rural areas of the district. At least six people including 12-year-old Ali Hamza, son of Ghulam Mohammad of Mauza Barana was killed when a wall of his house caved in. Similarly, seven-year-old Wajeeha Zaheer, d/o Zaheer of village Kalri died in wall collapse; eight-month-old Abdullah, s/o Zulfiqar of village Chak 468/JB died in his roof collapse; 4-year-old Tanzeela Bibi, d/o Haji Mehmood, of Mauza Darutta died in wall collapse; 9-year-old Sohaib Akhtar, s/o Ahmad Khan, died house collapse at Mauza Lodhran and Mumtaz Hussain s/o Allah Yar, a resident of Chak 156/JB was electrocuted to death. Meanwhile, Assistant Focal Person on Flood and Natural disasters, Umar Hayat Sipra said that six villages were worst affected by recent rains where at least 70 houses were partially damaged. On the other hand, the thunderstorm and rain which continued throughout the day paralyzed life in Chiniot city as most of the bazaars and roads wore the looking of ponds. A large number of vehicles including auto rickshaws and motorcycles were stuck as their engines ceased to work in knee-deep rainwater accumulated on different roads.
