MQM may join cabinet in upcoming expansion phase

ISLAMABAD - Although all the demands of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) from PPP are not met, yet it is most likely to rejoin the federal cabinet in the upcoming cabinet expansion phase. In top-level negotiations MQM did not budge an inch from its main demand of unseating Zulfiqar Mirza as Sindh home minister and now after achieving one of the major demands it might have started planning to rejoin the federal cabinet in the upcoming phase, political sources told The Nation. In the previous one month, the sources said, leaving all other matters party drew its full attention to get maximum strength for its public gathering in Punjab (Lahore). MQM has not only started considering rejoining federal cabinet but also PPP has restarted dropping hints to give vibrant ministries to MQM as per their choice, the sources said. MQM is most likely to get the portfolios of Overseas Pakistanis, Ports and Shipping while the decision of third ministerial slot for the Muttahida has not been decided yet, said the sources, adding that the MQM was also eyeing water and power and some other main ministry. It is relevant to mention here that currently Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has the charge of four ministries including information technology and telecommunications, petroleum and natural resources, overseas pakistanis, and ports and shipping. Earlier around a month ago keeping the pressure on the Pakistan Peoples Party leadership the MQM Rabita committee had decided to stay away from the proceedings of the Sindh Assembly but later changing its strategy they attended the session when some of its demands were met. It may be mentioned here that MQM quit the provincial government after the Sindh home minister declared Lyaris Peoples Amn Committee (PAC) as an affiliate of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). The MQM characterises PAC as a criminal gang that is behind extortion and kidnapping cases in Karachi. Political pundits assumed that President Zardari in the last meeting with MQM had managed to get new life for the PPP-MQM alliance by giving yet another assurance to MQM leadership for fulfilling their demand. Giving some other demands with PPP, the sources said, Muttahida might take strict stance over target killings in Karachi as party-level discussions have been going on for the last one-week. The sources said that keeping its main card close to its chest include flood surcharge through Presidential ordinance and recent hike in POL prices was waiting for right time to put forwards its other demands.
