KARACHI: The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), held a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, for 107 talented students enrolled in the two-year Associate Degree in Education (ADE) in Sindh.
“Caring and well trained teachers are critical to the future of Pakistan” stressed USAID Deputy Mission Director, Denise Herbol. “Pakistan and the United States have enjoyed a long and productive cooperation that spans more than 60 years. This graduation ceremony is yet another expression of the US Government’s long-term commitment to help build a stronger, more prosperous Sindh and Pakistan. Our priority is to train a new generation of teachers capable of helping students across Pakistan including Sindh reach their full potential” stressed the Deputy Mission Director, addressing the students and guests at the graduation ceremony.
The USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project (PRP) distributed tablets and certificates to the top 107 graduates of the ADE program. These students represented Government Teacher Training Institutes from all across Sindh. USAID has also constructed state-of-the-art Faculty of Education buildings for the teacher education degree programs in University of Karachi, University of Sindh and Shah AbdulLatif University in Sindh.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Fazlullah Pechuho, Secretary Education and Literacy Department of Sindh, lauded the efforts of the US government in improving the overall quality of basic education in Sindh.
The USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project is a $165 million project, designed to support provincial and regional departments of education to improve the reading skills of primary school children across the country.
A large number of participants including USAID Deputy Mission Director for Sindh & Balochistan Denise Herbol and Secretary Education and Literacy Department of Sindh, Dr Fazlullah Pechuho were present at the ceremony. Vice Chancellors from various universities, representatives from provincial education department also attended.
