MPs' body to take up memo issue on 21st

ISLAMABAD - Parliamentary Committee on National Security will take up the memo controversy on December 21 and take stock of the situation what the committee can do in this connection, especially when the matter is sub judice before the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Sources in the committee informed that the committee Chairman Senator Mian Raza Rabbani had deliberately deferred the matter and wanted to see the handling of the issue by the apex court which had issued notices to the respondents made in the petition by Mian Nawaz Sharif and other PML-N leaders and except President Asif Ali Zardari rest of the respondents including the Prime Minister, Chief of Army Staff and DG ISI had filed their replies to the court. Some of the members of the committee were of the view that committee would have limited scope in the matter as the memo controversy mainly involves criminal and forensic investigations in the matter whereas the committee was just a recommendatory body only to give recommendations to set the direction of further probe into the matter. A member of the committee belonging to ruling Pakistan People's Party informed TheNation on condition of anonymity that the role of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) was quite controversial in the whole affair, as on one hand Senator Ishaq Dar of PML-N had written a letter to Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on National Security seeking immediate convening of the committee's meeting to take up the memo controversy and consequently the meeting was called and some top ranking military and foreign office officials were asked to brief the committee on the issue. But on the other hand PML-N leadership without waiting for the outcome of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security's finding took the matter to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, expressing no trust in the committee and in a way pitched the committee against the apex court. The sources in the committee said that Chairman of the committee Senator Mian Raza Rabbani's wisdom and political sagacity saved both the institutions from embarrassment and delayed the matter by taking up the issue of NATO attack on Pak Army border-posts in Mohmand Agency, terming it the matter of great national importance.
