Fakhruddin to take oath tomorrow


ISLAMABAD - The newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim would take oath on Friday (tomorrow), the government announced on Wednesday.
Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, was born on February 12, 1928 in Ahmedabad.  He is a retired ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court and senior Advocate Supreme Court and a peace activist.  He also served as the interim Law Minister in 1993, and interim Justice Minister later.
He is well known as the former Attorney General of Pakistan during the government of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and served as his close legal adviser throughout the 1970s. In 1988, he was also Governor of Sindh, appointed by the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto during her first term.
In March 1981, serving as an ad hoc Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, he refused to take a fresh oath, under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) promulgated by General Zia-ul-Haq alongwith Justice Dorab Patel and Chief Justice Sheikh Anwarul Haq.  The Parliamentary Committee on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) developed consensus on the name of Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim for the position of the CEC.
Ebrahim’s name had been proposed by PML-N in May.
The PML-N had proposed the names of Justice Shakirullah Jan, Justice (Retd) Fakharuddin G. Ebrahim and Justice (Retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid for the post. The government had proposed the names of Justice (Retd) Munir A. Sheikh, Justice (r) Amirul Mulk Mengal and Justice (Retd) Zahid Qurban Alvi.
