2 killed, dozen hurt in rival sects clash

MUZAFFARGARH - At least two activists of a banned outfit were killed and a dozen sustained gunshot wounds when armed activists of their rival sect ambushed them here in Village Salowala, Alipur Muzaffargarh district on Sunday. Five of the injured are stated to be in critical condition and have referred to Nishtar Hospital Multan. As per detail, dozen armed Shia activists allegedly led by Ali Haider Kazmi and Imdad Ali Kazmi let off a volley of gunshots at the activists of Sipah-i-Sahaba in village Salowala here in Alipur when they were going to Punjnad Headworks to receive SSP leaders - Malik Ishaq and Khadim Hussain Dhillon who had to address public meetings. According to the police, two activists of the banned SSP identified as Mehbood Ahmed Sathari of Jatoi and Rana Fayyaz Ahmed of Alipur died while more than a dozen injured. The police said that five of the injured were in precarious condition at hospital. Following the incident, panic gripped the area and a heavy police contingent was deployed to control the situation. Meanwhile, DPO Rao Muneer Ahmed Zia said that the situation was well under control and the police were trying to placate the angry mob of religious activists. The DPO pointed out that one SSP activist was killed on the spot while he was not aware of the other who died in the hospital. However, family sources of Fayyaz confirmed his death. Eye-witnesses said that Shia activists were laying in ambush behind bushes near a petrol pump in Salowala, some 100-km south-west of Muzaffargarh city.
