ECP to collect tax and foreign trips details of candidates

ISLAMABAD - The Election Commission has approved amendment in the nomination paper for candidates contesting the general elections, with the inclusion of some new provisions regarding taxes.
The decision came at a meeting of the electoral body on Tuesday. Later, briefing the media, electoral official Sher Afgan said that separate columns would be included in the nomination papers seeking details of the utility bills of gas and electricity as well as taxes and assets of the candidates for the general polls.
The electoral body would also seek details of the trips to foreign countries paid by the candidates in the last three years, Afgan claimed.
The amendment in the nomination papers seemingly lacks any significance given that it was already announced that the nomination papers would be amended for the inclusion of new provisions on financial details of the candidates. The EC would hold meeting with Pakistan’s monetary bodies including State Bank and Federal Board of Revenue today (Wednesday) to chalk out strategy for proceeding against tax and loan defaulter politicians on the pretext of keeping them from contesting general elections.
Meanwhile, the electoral body abolished the voters’ lists of 2002 and 2008 general polls and kept an official copy of each of these lists for the maintenance of official record.
