PR not to repair inactive locomotives: Bilour

KARACHI - Pakistan Railway Minister Ghulam Ahmed Bilour on Monday visited the Railways Karachi Division and inspected the out of order locomotives. Upon the suggestions of the railway officials, the minister agreed not to repair the inactive locomotives, said the railway sources. As per detail, he visited the Karachi Cantt division. He was accompanied by General Manager Pakistan Railway Ashfaq Khattak, Inspector General of Railway Police, Divisional Superintendent Aftab Memon and other officials concerned. Bilour inspected the dysfunctional and damaged locomotives in diesel workshop at Karachi Cantt Station. He was briefed by the officials concerned advising that the inactive locomotives were unable to be repaired hence further expenditure should be stopped for their restoration and no effort should be made in this regard. The minister also visited the DS office. The source disclosed that the officials also suggested the minister that operation of more trains should be suspended to avoid further financial losses. On the other side, the railway labour unions requested to have a meeting with the minister. President of Pakistan Railway Labour Union, Manzoor Ahmed Razi, told The Nation that they wanted to inform the minister regarding the mismanagement in the railway department but unfortunately he refused to meet with the labour union. The minister, who does not have knowledge about the railway affairs, was misguided by the bureaucracy. The minister should review his earlier decisions of closing down many trains, as the decision was not in favour of the department, he added. Criticising on the railway officials, Razi said that due to the poor policies of the authorities, the operations of several trains had been suspended which added to the sufferings of people. He pointed out that earlier at least 350 passenger and over 40 good trains were operating across the country but the number of trains had been suspended one-by-one. Razi said that the railway department was still facing shortage of locomotives, coaches, power plants and other basic things to for the smooth function of the train service. But instead of dealing with such situation, the railway ministry and authorities are continuously warding off from their responsibilities. He said that an impression was created that the railway department was suffering with huge financial losses but the fact was something else. He added that the railway department could stand on its feet financially and can be stable but it was not possible in current condition and in the presence of some corrupt and inexperienced officials.
