Lyari medical college to get varsity status

KARACHI - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that it is prime motive of the government to spread education, particularly medical education, in every nook and corner of the province. President Asif Ali Zardari is very keen to develop and flourish Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical College Lyari, so as to provide latest medical teaching and learning facilities to youth, particularly belonging to remote and less-developed areas of province, the CM said and announced that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical College Lyari would be upgraded to the level of university in near future. Syed Qaim Ali Shah expressed his satisfaction and happiness over the work being done in the college and admissions so far achieved. He hoped that the college would soon be affiliated and recognised by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). Principal/Project Director of the Medical College Lyari Prof Iqbal Ahmed Memon lauded the role and efforts of the Sindh Chief Minister and said that without support of the Chief Minister, it was not possible to successfully establish the medical college in Lyari, Karachi. He informed that there were 13 faculties in the college; 7 were for chemical and 6 for Medicine/Clinical faculties, while the admission policy so approved had been implemented. Professor Memon added that as per initial requirement, six demonstrators were working in the college. He also informed that team of PMDC visited the college, and has formally approved & recognised it. He said that admission process for first year had successfully been completed with quota fixed for Lyari, Keemari, Bin Qasim, Malir and other areas. Chief Minister Shah also gave signal of go-ahead and said that in spite of location of college in remote and troubled area, which will be controlled and resolved soon. Syed Qaim Ali Shah also accepted the invitation to visit the college soon. Later, the Principle of college on behalf of faculty members presented shield, Ajrak and Sindhi cap to the chief minister. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Tuesday arrived at the residence of late Amir Shah, President of Peoples Unity, Union of PIA, at Gulistan-e-Jauhar and offered fateha and condolences with bereaved family members. Syed Qaim Ali Shah also offered fateha for the departed soul of Khalid Jagirani, who was Sub-Engineer in SITE Association Karachi, as Jagiranis family members were also present there. Aamir Shah and Khalid Jagirani were killed three days ago in a target killing incident. The chief minister expressed his deep sorrow with aggrieved family members of both assassinated leaders and assured that the killers would be apprehended soon and taken into task. The chief minister also expressed sympathies with family members of both affected families, and met with two daughters and one son of the late Amir Shah. Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that it is his responsibility to look after the education and other needs of his children. On the occasion father-in-law of late Amir Shah, Ali Moazim, mother-in-law, brothers Khawar Shah (City President PPP), Advisor to CM Rashid Rabbani, Special Assistant to CM Mr.Waqar Mehdi, General Secretary PPP Karachi Division Saeed Ghani, Zulfiqar Qaim Khani, Sardar Khan and others were present. Later, the Chief Minister Sindh arrived at National Hospital Kala Pull, where he inquired health of sister of Coordinator to CM Muhammad Siddique Abu Bhai. Advisor to CM Sindh Rashid Rabbani, Special Assistant to CM Waqar Mehdi and others accompanied the CM.
