SAHIWAL - State Minister for Interiors and PPP Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich has said Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) believed in the power through democratic process and appointment of a consensus Chief Election Commissioner reflected the party’s priorities for strengthening democracy in the country.
He was addressing a press conference during a short stay here on Thursday. He was going to Multan to express solidarity with PPP candidate Abdul Qadir Gilani who was contesting by-election in NA-151.
He said that in compliance with apex court decision former PM Gilani quit premiership, adding that the PPP had always accepted Supreme Court decision.
PPP Divisional Organiser Mahar Ghulam Farid Kathya, District President Zaki Ch, District Youth Wing President Tahir Abbas Sindhu, PPP Punjab General Secretary Haji Azizur Rehman Chan and Information Secretary Raja Muhammad Aamir were also present on the occasion.
He claimed that the Supreme Court decision contributed to the Bhutto’s hanging and later Justice Nasim Hassan Shah termed it a judicial murder.
He argued that the Benazir’s government had been dissolved twice, but never restored.
While criticising the PML-N, he said that Nawaz Sharif never practiced what he preached. When he was summoned by the Supreme Court, the PML-N supporters attacked Supreme Court buildings, he recalled.
Warraich further said that the Supreme Court sent one elected PM to the gallows and other was disqualified. He said that the PM had been barred by the Constitution from writing letters against President, because both the President and PM enjoyed immunity under the Constitution.
He said that PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif went abroad after tendering apology to the then President. Referring to the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner, the PPP Punjab president said that it was the credit of the PPP to appoint a consensus candidate even agreeing to the name given by the opposition.
He said that people of Multan strongly reacted to the disqualification of the PM Gilani and voted the PPP candidate in its by-election and PPP would win NA-151 election. He said that the parliament was an independent institution to change the legal process as it was the real source of strength for all the institutions. He said that the Constitutional and judiciary were to be separated but due to need of the hour, the government did not take such decision to show that the government had full respect for the judiciary.
While rejecting the early elections demand, he said that the general election would be held in March 2013.
