Stop leg pulling, let us do work: PM

ISLAMABAD- Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today has asked political opponents to stop leg pulling and let the government do its work for which people have voted them to power.

Addressing launching ceremony of the free laptops scheme at Islamabad’s Convention Centre the PM urged political opponents to respect government’s mandate and demonstrate responsibility over serious national issues. Nawaz Sharif has said that he is PM for those who voted for him and those who didn’t vote for him, adding “don’t pull our legs and let us work.”
“Opponents should wait for next general elections and refrain from using undemocratic means,” he said, urging media to show real picture over government performance. “I have a clear picture of the world but some TV channels are presenting some other world.” He affirmed that his government would overcome electricity shortage during its tenure.
The PM reiterated to maintain law and order situation in the country and vowed to make Gwadar one of the top most modern port in the world, like that of Singapore and Dubai.
“Some elements are trying to misguide the youth, but we have initiated several schemes to benefit them regardless of their political affiliation,” he said. The PM announced that 100,000 students will be given laptops every year. “The promises we made with the nation are being fulfilled now. Other than the laptops, more than 40,000 students are benefited from the fee reimbursement scheme,” the PM said, and vowed to change Pakistan’s fate in five years.
Earlier the PM formally launched first-ever national-level laptop scheme aimed at providing free laptops to half a million students in five years. The scheme has been launched under Prime Minister's Youth Program and being supervised by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Chairperson of the program.
Addrssing on the occassion Chairperson Prime Minister's Youth Program Maryam Nawaz said her entire team is working day and night to ensure implementation of the prime minister's schemes for youth while ensuring merit and transparency. She said 12,000 successful applicants of the first two ballots of the loan scheme have not only established their businesses but have also started the process of returning the loan.
Ms Sharif said 40,000 students are being reimbursed their fee under another scheme. There are plans to further widen the scope of this scheme. She said over five hundred thousand laptops will be distributed amongst the outstanding students in five years of the present government. She assured that no student would remain deprived of education just because of lack of resources. She said 25,000 thousand youths are learning different skills under the skills development program and their first batch will pass out in August this year.
Speaking on the occasion, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said funds have been shifted to the higher education commission for the lap top and fee reimbursement schemes. He said the government is giving priority to the welfare of students and these schemes will continue for the entire five year tenure of the PML-N government. He said the Prime Minister's initiative of micro finance scheme will also be launched shortly.
In his welcome address, Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said the prime minister's schemes for youth including lap top and fee reimbursement are aimed at providing enabling environment to the youth and promote research culture.
He said it is for the first time that the higher education commission was disbursed the full budget in the current fiscal year while a record amount of 63 billion rupees have been allocated for it for the next financial year. He assured that the universities will be equipped with all the latest facilities in order to facilitate the students. He said a Chinese company has showed its intent to start production of one thousand laptops in the country which will set the foundation of a new industry.
