Karachi- The ex-minister for prison belonging to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Sadiq Memon had facilitated the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) inmates and approved to keep the party members in the same barrack.
According to media reports a meeting between the then Sindh minister for prisons and an MQM delegation held here in October 2011 had discussed the issues relating to 95 MQM workers and as a result of which approval was granted to their detention in a separate barrack.
Besides the then minister for prisons Sadiq Memon, the meeting was attended by a member of Sindh assembly, the then IG Prisons, Ghulam Qadri Thebo and two ministers belonging to MQM.
The Jail officials had also informed the meeting about the ‘insulting behaviour’ of MQM detainees as well as the threats they were given to them by Saulat Mirza.
“I know where your children are studying”, Saulat Mirza was quoted as saying by the jail staff. Khalid Afzal, one of the former MQM ministers, had taken responsibility that all the MQM prisoners would abide by the prison laws and if someone violates the laws party would take immediate action against them. The minutes of the meeting were also signed by the then Inspector General Prison Ghulam Qadir Thebo who is presently serving as Police Chief of Karachi.
