Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was barred from addressing a function in connection with the Martyrs' Week and put under house arrest at his Nigeen residence.
The amalgam has condemned the police action and reiterated the Eidgah Chalo call for May 21 (Tuesday). They have appealed the people to make it successful.
Reports said after his return from attending a function at Islamia Higher Secondary School at Rajouri Kadal here, Mirwaiz was put under house arrest at his Nigeen residence.
"Hurriyat Chairman was scheduled to address another function in Khanyar at 3 pm in connection with Hafta Shohda being observed by the Awami Action Committee. But he was informed by police that he is under house arrest," Media Advisor to Hurriyat Conference (M) Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam told Greater Kashmir.
Earlier reports said police and CRPF sealed a park adjacent to Martyrs' Graveyard Khanyar where Mirwaiz was scheduled to address a seminar. A report said half a dozen Hurriyat workers were detained by the police in the area and later released.
"Section 144 is imposed here (Khanyar). No assembly can be held," officials at Police Station Khanyar said. "We haven't detained anybody."
A Hurriyat spokesman said, "The vehicles of AAC were seized while its workers and activists were harassed. The posters and banners of the party at several places in the city were removed."
He said the government has "once again resorted to anti-democratic and anti-people policies to silence the genuine voices of Kashmir." "By putting Mirwaiz under house arrest, the Government stopped Kashmiris from paying tributes to the martyrs of the movement.
It is highly regrettable," the spokesman said, adding "such dictatorial measures can never weaken the spirit of the pro-freedom leadership."
