Docs murder sparks protest

QUETTA - On the call of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), local doctors observed strike in all the government hospitals in provincial capital on Wednesday to protest against the brutal murder of one of their colleagues. Kidnappers abducted Dr Mumtaz Haider Naqvi from Sabzaal Road on March 28 and his bullet-riddled body was recovered from Killi Kamalo area of Quetta the other day. Doctors in Bolan Medical Complex Hospital, Sandeman Civil Hospital and in other government hospitals boycotted visiting OPDs and operation theatres of the hospitals. Meanwhile, the PMA Balochistan chapter held a meeting wherein it decided that all the doctors would tender their resignations to protest against, what they termed, the authorities failure in establishing its writ, ensuring protection to the people especially the doctors. However, the final decision will be taken after the approval by the Doctors Academic Council, which is scheduled to meet tomorrow (April 22). In the meeting, presided over by PMA Balochistan chapter president Dr Sultan, there was complete unanimity among the participants that the provincial government failed to provide protection to the general public, particularly doctors, as so far eight doctors had been killed during so far.
