Massive power breakdown hits Sindh, Baluchistan

KARACHI- A major power breakdown overnight plunged over 80 percent areas of Karachi into dark, in Sunday’s wee hours as K-Electric authorities were making efforts to restore electricity supply.

The electricity supply could not be restored till 10am, seven hours after the breakdown. Talking to a private TV channel, K-Electric spokesman Ahmed Faraz said main transmission line of National Transmission and Distribution Company (NTDC) tripped leading to suspension of electricity.

He said the power supply from national grid was disrupted, after a technical glitch in high-tension line that spawned a major power breakdown overnight.

He said nearly entire city is suffering from the power failure, adding he cannot give timeframe for the restoration of the power supply, but assured that the repair work for the restoration has already been started. The power supply to all the government hospitals also discontinued, putting the lives of critical patients at risk.

Meanwhile, the power failure was also reported in various cities of Sindh, including Hyderabad and Jamshoro, apparently due to tripping of the NTDC links.

The NTDC fault also triggered power disruption in Baluchistan, leaving several cities including Quetta, Nasirabad, Jafarabad, Jhal Magsi, Sohbat Pur, without electricity.
