ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) suspended the licences of Geo Entertainment and ARY News on Friday.According to sources, the Pemra took this decision during a meeting held at its headquarters.
The Geo Entertainment licence had been suspended over airing blasphemous contents on one of its morning shows while the licence of ARY News had been suspended over complaints that it had made defamatory statements against the judiciary in its talk show, the sources explained.
A press release issued by PEMRA said that the Authority, after detailed discussions, while considering all the relevant provisions of PEMRA Laws,  has taken the decision.
“The authority has taken a serious notice of the violations committed by Geo Entertainment and ARY News. The meeting has unanimously decided to immediately suspend license of both the channels for a period of 30 days and imposed fine of Rs. 10 million,” says a press release issued by the Pemra late Friday night.
The Authority also banned programme “Utho Jago Pakistan” aired on Geo Entertainment, its entire team including host Shaista Lodhi, and producer forthwith, besides banning the rebroadcasting of this programme on any channel.
Regarding the violations committed, according to the press release, by ARY News, the Authority unanimously decided to immediately suspend the licence of ARY News for a period of 15 days and imposed a fine of Rs 10 million.
“The Authority also banned programme “Khara Sach” aired on ARY News and its anchor person Mubasher Luqman, forthwith on persistently airing contemptuous and malicious campaign against the judiciary.”
The sources in PEMRA said that all field offices of the Authority had been directed to implement the decisions of the Authority in letter and spirit with immediate effect.
