MULTAN: A man whom a woman threw acid for allegedly refusing a marriage proposal has died at a hospital here.
On June 16 the woman named Shamim Bano, 40, threw acid on 22-year-old Sadaqat after he refused to marry her. The victim suffered burns on more than fifty percent of his body and was under treatment at Nishtar Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries today.
Shamim has been under arrest and has confessed to the crime in the initial interrogation. A case has been lodged against her with terrorism clauses attached to it.
Though cases of acid throwing against women are common in Pakistan, this case is unique as it involves a woman throwing acid over a man for rejecting a proposal.
There are an estimated 80-100 cases of acid attacks in Pakistan every year although independent organizations consider the figure to be much higher.
There are various reasons behind the assaults which includes personal reasons as marriage proposal rejections or divorce issues, property and land disputes and also due to religious extremism.
