USAID, NRSP active to give MAPs collecting training to poor

SWAT - USAID entrepreneurs and National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) have jointly started work on 'value chain development project on medicinal and aromatic plants in Swat. The objective of this project is to train the poor marginalized communities, involved in collecting MAPs, as their side occupation in 13 union councils of Upper Swat. Collectors in these UCs will be trained in proper methods, including post-collection processing, standard packing, value addition and appropriate marketing. Project interventions will link the community collectors with major national markets, exporters, and users and processing units for obtaining maximum economics return through direct business development with the end users without their exploitation by the middle men. In order to improve the capacity of the local collectors it was essential to train the NRSP deputes staff and enable them to deliver the same trainings in communities clusters for achieving the project objective in this three-days workshop 24 members of the NRSP staff Mingora participated and trained Arafat of NRSP office Islamabad also joined the last day session. At the end of the session the participants successfully presented their learning. Activity based learning in the field was an essential part of the training. NRSP, MAPs technical specialist conducted the sessions as a master trainer assisted by other senior staff of the project. After this ToT it is clear the community collectors will learn more about the scientific methods of collection, processing value addition and appropriate marketing of MAPs under the USAIDs entrepreneurs value chain project on Maps.
