ISLAMABAD - Deputy Speaker National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi has been unanimously elected as a Member of the Executive Committee of from Asia-Pacific region of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). He will be representing the Asia-pacific region in the IPU political and parliamentary affairs. Faisal Karim Kundi is leading a 10-member parliamentary delegation to 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union being held in Bern, Switzerland. The election of Faisal Karim Kundi to the exalted slot is being regarded as a momentous achievement of Pakistan and recognition of his contribution in the regional and international moots of the inter-parliamentary league. His election took place in an impressive ceremony where representatives of the parliaments from Asia-Pacific unanimously proposed the name of Kundi to represent Asia-pacific region in Executive Committee of IPU. Earlier, Gohar Ayub Khan (Former Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan) ran but could not for make up to the presidency of the IPU in 90's. The 15-member executive committee, a representative body of the parliaments of world, is presided over by the president IPU and assisted by the secretary general IPU in overseeing the administration and provides advice to the IPU. The executive committee while discharging its functions has the support of the IPU secretariat for deciding various matters and agenda of the different conferences of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Pakistan is one of the members of the IPU, which comprises 157 parliaments and 9 associate members of the world and equally influential body like the United Nations. It discusses all regional and international issues and expresses its opinion on such matters. Pakistan has been participating in its activities since it joined the organization in 1950's. Meanwhile, Dr Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly, has congratulated Faisal Karim Kundi on his unanimous election. She termed it a befitting recognition of Pakistan's role in the comity of democratic nations. She also expressed her gratitude to the IPU members for extending their support in that regard.
