24 die as Punjab bears monsoon outburst

LAHORE (Agencies) - Heavy monsoon downpour continued to lash Punjab Wednesday, as at least 24 people, including seven children, lost their lives in various rain-related incidents. The deaths occurred due to electrocution, house collapses, traffic accidents and floods in Lahore, Sialkot, Noorpur Thal, Daska, Bado Malhi, Mandi Fiazabad, Gujranwala and other areas. The rains, however, brought relief to the people from sultry heat while the growers are happy as rains are expected to cover the water shortage. Some parts of the country received over 100mm rain, flooding the low-lying areas in Sargodha, Gujranwala and Lahore, while residents of 55 Chiniot villages have started evacuating after they were warned of flood because of the rising water in River Chenab. The roads and the streets in Sialkot, Jhelum, Kundian and Gujrat have turned into streams as gushing water forced the people to stay indoors. In Lahore, four persons, including a woman and two children, lost their lives. Fifty persons were injured in a roof collapse in Mandi Bahauddin where they had gathered for a Qul ceremony. 12-year-old-Arshad of Sialkot and another youngster of Noorpur Thal were electrocuted. In Daska, Shahnawaz (35) and a blind man lost their lives as a result of electrocution and falling from the rooftop respectively. On the other hand, Zubair was electrocuted while Maqsood died of snakebite in Bado Malhi.
