A 25-year-old villager was tortured to death allegedly by the Kaleke Police and following protest by the villagers, the police have registered a case against three policemen and a villager and arrested Muharrir Umar Draaz while the other managed to escape.
According to Muhammad Rafique, a resident of Bhoon Kalan, father of victim Tasawar Abbas, the Kaleke Police took Tasawar to the police station in connection with bogus theft case registered against him on the behest of Muhammad Aslam, where police severely tortured him to death. However, the police staged a drama that Tasawar had committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The police rushed the dead body to the city morgue but when his father and hundreds of villagers came to know about the police torture they rushed to the city morgue and took into custody the dead body and raised slogans against the police torture. Later, the villagers brought the body to Fawara Chowk and blocked the traffic by placing the body on it. They demanded stern action against the accused Muhammad Aslam and policemen. Meanwhile, the City Police SHO along with heavy police contingent rushed to the spot and resorted to baton charge the protesters. Following which there was free of all between the protesters and the police as a result of which few persons were also injured. The police forced the protesters to disperse but they refused until registration of case against the murderers.
The local journalists also strongly condemned misbehaviour of the SHQ Rana Zulifqar towards the covering mediamen and demanded action against the SHO.
After four hours at about 1am Tuesday, the Saddr DSP reached the spot and assured that the case would be registered against the accused.
The police have registered a case against Muhammad Aslam of Bhoon Kalan, Muharrir Umer Draz, Head Constable Sana Ullah, Constable Muhammad Arshad and have arrested Umar Draaz. Later, autopsy of the deceased was conducted by the Medical Board at DHQ Hospital.
