LAHORE - As the PPP is going to celebrate its 44th foundation day on November 30, some disgruntled elements within the party, led by Naheed Khan and her spouse Senator Safdar Abbasi, have decided to hold a separate function in Lahore to mark the day. Visibly perturbed over what she calls wrong policies of the partys top leadership, Naheed has announced to hold the event on November 28 which will be attended by old PPP guards who believe they have been consigned to oblivion after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed. Abdul Qadir Shaheen, former president of Peoples Labour Bureau, an PPP wing, has been assigned the responsibility of organising workers convention while a number of old party workers have been invited to turn up on the occasion. It merits mentioning here that Naheed had been arranging similar functions separately in the past two years on the occasion of Benazir Bhuttos death anniversary on December 27. The PPPs top leadership, on the other hand, has expressed extreme displeasure over the announcement by the rebel group, saying it was uncalled for and amounted to serious breach of party discipline. Talking to TheNation, PPP Secretary Information Fauzia Wahab accused Naheed of creating dissent in the party to advance her personal agenda. She has no ideological conviction with the party and is resorting to cheap tactics just because she has lost her previous position in the party, Fauzia remarked, adding that when she (Naheed) was at the helms of affairs, she would not have tolerated any violation of discipline, as violators were punished to the extent of expulsion from the party in her times. One should remain loyal with the party even in turbulent times, she further stated. Talking to this scribe on Sunday, Naheed denied the charge that she was going to hold an event in isolation from other party cadres. Since no ceremony on partys foundation day has been organised at the central level, party men are free to mark the day as they wish, she said, adding that an open invitation had been extended to all party workers without any discrimination. She said during the days of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, there used to be one central ceremony on the occasion, but it was not the case at present. Since a number of events have been organised by the party to celebrate the day, the one to be arranged by me would be just one of them, she said. She also dispelled the impression that she was going to hold a separate workers convention on partys foundation day. Naheed said she did not care about any disciplinary action from partys top leadership, and will go ahead with her programme as planned. She said there was a need to revive the hope in the PPP workers who had been ignored by the present leadership. Naheed said it was imperative that the party should be run according to the principles, which served the basis of its foundation. She said decision-making process in the party was highly flawed as the role of partys central executive committee, supposed to be the sole decision-making body, had been reduced to nothing.
