1,200-kg dead meat seized; seven held

In wake of the persistent complaints of citizens, a special team accompanied by Veterinary Officer Dr Ali Ahmar, TMO Zafar Abbas and patrolling police personnel launched a crackdown on butchers selling unhygienic mutton and beef and seized 600 kgs of substandard and stale meat which was destroyed in the canal later.
According to official source, the personnel of patrolling police Iqbal Nagar seized 600 kgs of unhygienic beef from a van which was being transported to Gujranwala for sale. The police have registered a case against meat butchers namely Muhammad Awais, Khawar, Mukhtar Ahmad, Nadeem, Muhammad Hanif, Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Javed, Nasir Ali, Abid Ali, Shan Ahmad and Javed Shahid. Five of the accused have been arrested while the others are absconding. Meanwhile, 600 kgs meat of dead animals was caught while it was being transported to Karachi from Ahmadpur East at Liaquatpur Railway Station. Two accused were arrested. According to details, two persons identified as Rehan and Farhan, residents of Karachi were transporting meat of four dead buffaloes, weighing 600 kg to Liaquatpur Railway Station on a pickup van from Ahmadpur East for onwards shipment to Karachi.
Meanwhile, on a tip-off, the police carried out a raid and recovered the meat while Veterinary Dr. Muhammad Ashraf also rushed to on spot. He, after a thorough examination, declared the meat to be of dead cattle. Police arrested both of the criminals and started investigation.
