KARACHI- U.S. Consul General Brian Heath and officials from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) formally transferred 6 police trucks and 1,000 bulletproof jackets and helmets to the Sindh police. Sindh Inspector General (IG) of Police Ghulam Haider Jamali was also present at the ceremony.
The US CG said working together, Sindh Police and INL officials had developed a new training regime for Sindh’s police forces that will increase professionalism, improve investigative skills, and ultimately improve law and order throughout Sindh.
This was a first installment of 12 vehicles, specifically for Sindh female police officers. The vehicles, valued at $126,000 will improve mobility and officer safety, stated Heath.
According to Heath, INL also installed the $1.6 million Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) at the Sindh Police Forensic Division. IBIS provides ballistic identification support to Sindh Province and enhances forensic investigative capabilities.
Since 2011, the INL Police Assistance Program had provided $32 million in assistance to the Sindh police. This included armored personnel carriers, pick-up trucks, forensic equipment, bulletproof jackets and helmets, thermal imaging devices, and global satellite positioning (GSP).
In addition, INL also assisted Sindh Police with curriculum development, including specialized skills such as investigations, human rights, officer safety, and forensics. INL assistance equipped 3 women police stations in Karachi, supplying communications equipment, personal protective gear, first aid kits, coaster buses, vans, and pickup trucks.
