CHARSADDA - At least three persons were killed and 41 others, including 13 policemen, a child and a woman, sustained injuries in a motorcycle-planted bomb explosion, targeting a police van, on Nowshera-Charsadda Road in Charsadda on Tuesday.
According to details, a police van, carrying prisoners and 14 policemen, was going to a local court when it was targeted at Farooq-e-Azam Chowk at around 7am when a bomb planted on a bike went off with a bang.
As a result, Police Constable Nasir Khan of Charssada district and two other persons who had sustained critical wounds were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar where they expired while 41 injured were admitted to various hospitals of Charsadda and Peshawar.
Emergency was declared at District Headquarters Hospital Charsadda. According to hospital sources, 11 injured were in critical condition.
At the time of the blast, people were busy in shopping in bazaars when the tragic incident occurred. Eyewitnesses said the huge blast created panic among people.
Charsadda District Police Officer Shafiullah Khan said the bomb had been planted on a motorcycle and the main target was the police van. He added it was a remote-controlled attack. The blast smashed the windowpanes of nearby homes while the police van was totally damaged. On receiving information, the police rushed to the blast site and cordoned off the area. According to the bomb disposal squad, 4kg explosive material was used in the blast.
It is worth mentioning that before the blast, Qaumi Watan Party Chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao was due to address a public meeting at 2pm in Charsadda in connection with the death anniversary of his party MPA Alamzeb Umerzai, while Ahle Sunnat-wal-Jamaat central amir Maulana Muhammad Ahmad Ludhiyanvi was also going to address Abu Bakar Conference organised by his party at a mosque near Farooq-e-Azam Chowk.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. PTI Chairman Imran Khan and KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak have strongly condemned the attack on the police van. They have also expressed deep shock over the loss of precious lives.
2 PEACE VOLUNTEERS SHOT DEAD
INP adds: Two members of peace committee in Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency were killed in separate incidents of terrorism on Tuesday.
According to reports, one member of the peace committee was shot dead by armed men in Akakhel area of Bara while the other member of the committee from the agency was killed in firing by miscreants in Jehangirabad area of Peshawar.
It is worth mentioning that the militants particularly target members of peace committees in FATA who support government’s efforts to restore peace in the troubled agencies.
