'Honest Swati never practised what he preached

ISLAMABAD - The JUI-F leader who is receiving endless praises these days for declaring 'war against corruption and getting his ministerial slot sacrificed at the hands of Prime Minister, was himself reportedly involved in fraudulent practices. Information available with The Nation supported by exclusive documentary evidences reveal that on July 23, 2001, Azam Khan Swati issued a note of $1 million for the assistance of flood affectees of Dadar village, a district of Mansehra that was worst hit by flash floods. Two days later, the note was found to be a fake one. An FIR had been registered in Shinkiari Police Station in Mansehra against the former minister in this regard. A letter vide number 3240 dated July 25, 2001 was sent by the then deputy commissioner, Mansehra to the former home secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa mentioning that Azam Khan, a resident of Oghi, (Swatis native village in Mansehra) had issued the same note to one Maulana Nazir. The letter said that the matter was referred to the then commandant Junior Officers Academy (JLA) Shinkiari and the commandant constituted a four-member committee with DC as its chairman, for the deposit of donation into safe custody. The note was handed over to the manager of National Bank of Pakistan in Mansehra against which a receipt was given to the DC. Former governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah and ex-corps commander General Ehsan-ul-Haq were also informed. On July 25, the NBP management declared the note as fake. Meanwhile, Azam Khan Swati had gone in hide. The DC tried to confirm donation from Mr Azam Khan who was not available for the last two days. On the third day, i.e. 25th, the donor informed the DC that the note is not genuine which is reported vide no. 851-58 dated July 25 2001. The SP Mansehra is asked to take legal action, the letter reads. The documents suggest that during a provincial assemblys session in 2002, former MPA, KP Assembly, Zar Gul Khan, had asked the provincial government authorities to explain as to what course of legal action had been adopted against the issuance of bogus note by the JUI-F Senator Azam Khan Swati. In reply, the provincial government had confirmed the incident citing that the district administration and police had been asked to proceed against Swati. Interestingly, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) was ruling in the province and JUI-F was part of it. The documents also suggest that Swatis brother, an MNA, had faced different cases in National Accountability Bureau NAB and accountability courts for timber smuggling and funds embezzlement.
