Adiala prisoners enjoy phone facility

‘Bribe’ shades off security situation

RAWALPINDI - As the government has put security personnel and law enforcement agencies on toes to guard all the jails in the country, which are housing hardcore terrorists, since the prime minister lifted moratorium on death penalty, a major security lapse has come to light in Adiala Jail where several mobile phone and V-phone sets are being used by the prisoners, allegedly with convenience of jail authorities, reliable sources disclosed to The Nation on Monday.
According to intelligence reports, since the PM lifted ban over death penalty after Peshawar tragedy and terrorists are being sent to the gallows, the militants might launch attacks on jails to set their accomplices free.
The government has beefed up security of jails by deputing personnel of Pakistan Army, Rangers, Elite Force and other sensitive departments. But the blunder being committed in Adyala Jail might wreak havoc at anytime.
Though the government had installed jammers inside the barracks to disconnect the cellular service, yet a large number of hardcore criminals and terrorists, including a notorious Rawalpindi-based land grabber, have been using mobile phones and V-phone sets to communicate outside the jail, apparently with alleged convenience of high-ups and staffers of Adyala Jail, sources said.
Sources claimed that the jail authorities had made some jammers ineffective because of which cellular service and V-phone sets were working inside the jail and the criminals and terrorists were easily communicating outside the jail. Sources said that the jail authorities received Rs 30,000 from a prisoner for providing him the facility of cellphone or V-phone.
The sources; while providing The Nation a list containing the names of hardcore criminals/terrorists, their barrack numbers and even phone numbers they are using inside the jail, said that only a surprise visit by the government big wheels could reveal the heinous crime being committed inside Adyala Jail. Sources said that the jails authorities hid the cell phones/V sets and installed jammers inside whenever some inspection team visited the jail.
Inspector General of Punjab Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir did not attend his cell phone when this scribe contacted him to know his point of view while Superintendent Adyala Jail Malik Mushtaq Ahmed Awan was not available for his comments on the issue.
At present, Asia’s largest Adyala Jail is housing some 9 terrorists including PAF former technician Khalid Mehmood involved in Musharraf attack case who are likely to be hanged in upcoming days.
