Defying ban, colourful kites dot the sky

GUJRANWALA/FAISALABAD – Despite ban on kite flying, Basant was celebrated with full vivacity in every nook and corner of Gujranwala and Faisalabad.Youths kept rocking the rooftops as music of "BO Kaatta" prevailed in the surroundings. Along with kites, bullets and sound from the amplifiers also touched the skies.Colorful Kites kept mocking the law enforcers in the areas of Model Town, Satellite Town, Ratta Road, Popular Nursery,Gondlanwala Road, Nowshehra Road, College Road, Baghbanpura, Khiyali, Fareed Town, Khokharki.Talking to The NATION, some youngsters said that they always followed the law but Basant was the only festival that gave them chance when everyone enjoyed regardless of gender and age."The government should impose a ban on chemical and glass-coated string instead of depriving us of the fun and excitement associated with the event," said Awais Goraya, a resident of Farid Town.Earlier, according to various press releases of Gujranwala Police, massive crackdown was conducted and thousands of kites were confiscated and kite sellers arrested.But contrary to their tall claims, Basant celebrations have exposed the slackness and inefficiency of the authorities concerned.INF adds: Police arrests around1,000 kite flyers and registered 150 cases in a crackdown on Basant Festival in Faisalabad on Friday.According to SSP (operations) Sadiq Dogar, police raided at various areas of Faisalabad and arrested a thousand of people who were flying kites and celebrating Basant, while 150 cases were registered in different police stations. Police also seized kites and threads .The actions were conducted due to violation of Anti-Kite Flying Act and section 144.
