Pakistan reaffirms support to Kashmiris

| CCNS decides to approach UNHRC for fact-finding mission to IHK | Wows to weed out terrorists | Cordial meeting offsets impression of civil-military tiff

ISLAMABAD - Putting their weight behind the freedom struggle of people of Kashmir the political and military leadership of Pakistan agreed yesterday that the solution to the decades-old dispute lies in early implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The Cabinet Committee on National Security (CCNS) yesterday expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation in the Indian occupied Kashmir in the wake of the martyrdom of young freedom fighter Burhanuddin Muzzaffar Wani.

The committee met under the chair of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who landed back in the federal capital a day earlier after a gap of two months.

Before the meeting, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif held one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and briefed him on internal and external security issues, including the Pak-Afghan tension on Torkham border crossing and the developments taking place afterwards.

Insiders in the ruling PML-N informed The Nation that the intelligence based targeted operations and their result all over the country also came under sharp focus with both the leaders expressing their commitment to continue them to weed out militants completely.

Lauding the relentless and unmatched contributions and sacrifices of Pakistan’s Armed Forces and security personnel in the Zarb-e-Azb operation, the meeting expressed satisfaction over the gains achieved so far.

The meeting also appreciated the role of military and civil intelligence agencies against the nefarious designs of the international agencies and hostile countries.

It decided that effective border management system between Pakistan and Afghanistan would be introduced as it is in the interest of both the countries.

The meeting between the military and civilian leadership brought to an end the rumours about the civil-military tiff on certain issues as both of them held meeting in cordial manner and their demeanour in the CCNS meeting later also showed that both sides were in complete harmony.

Sources further informed that the marked shift of the prime minister, who was strong proponent of friendly relations with India and over the past couple of years had demonstrated it by his conduct, also showed that the differences between the civil and military leadership of the country were thinning out.

They said that on Afghan issue also both the civil and military leadership was on same page and it was reiterated in the meeting that Islamabad would not let anyone use its soil for terrorist activities in the neighbouring countries and expect reciprocation of same resolve from the neighbours.

The meeting strongly condemned the continuing brutal oppression of the Indian security forces on innocent Kashmiris who have been peacefully protesting against Wani’s martyrdom.

Nawaz maintained that the "brutal use of force is a blatant violation of fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people which no civilised society permits".

Indian attempts to claim the situation in held Kashmir as an internal matter is "factually incorrect, legally untenable and a violation of international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions", the premier was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his office.

It said India will not be able to legitimise its occupation in held Kashmir by suppressing the voices of Kashmiris. Nawaz reiterated that the only solution to the Kashmir issue would be "early implementation of UNSC resolutions, and a fair and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices".

"We have provided and will continue to provide diplomatic, political and moral support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the realisation of their fundamental right to self-determination in accordance with the UNSC resolutions."

The meeting resolved to approach the UN Human Rights Council on its own and also on behalf of the OIC Contact Group on Kashmir to request the body to send a fact-finding mission to IHK.

The mission's aim would be to "investigate the slaughter of innocent civilians and impose a ban on the use of pellet guns for dispersing people exercising their right to protest".

The meeting unanimously called upon the international community to condemn human rights violations by Indian security forces and play their role in ensuring the realisation of UNSC resolutions.
