Islamabad-The Supreme Court yesterday suspended arrest warrants of model Ayyan Ali, which were issued on Thursday last by a local court of Rawalpindi.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Gulzar Ahmed issued notice to the federal secretary ministry of interior and SHO Waris Khan Police Station, Rawalpindi.
Sardar Latif Khan Khosa appearing on behalf of Ayyan said there should be no injustice with his client. He contended that the arrest warrants were issued against his client despite the fact that the high court is already dealing with this matter.
He prayed that the warrants be suspended. He said that third time Ayyan had been stopped from proceeding abroad.
Additional Advocate General Rana Waqar who was present in the court said that though he was not looking after this case, if the court wants to suspend the arrest warrants then he was ready to argue the case.
Upon that Justice Ejaz said nothing terrible would happen if stay is granted against the arrest warrants of Ayyan for two or three days.
Magistrate Gulfam Butt on July 21 had issued arrest warrants of Ayyan and two Pakistan Customs officials — Zargham and Dr Haroon — in connection with the killing of a customs inspector, who would have been a key prosecution witness in the money laundering case against the model.
Customs Inspector Chaudhry Ejaz Mahmood was shot dead last year outside his house.
According to the widow, Ayyan was responsible for the murder of her husband and her name needed to be put on the Exit Control List.
She further said that the police needed to investigate Ayyan in the murder case.
Inspector Mahmood was shot and injured by two unidentified men outside his house in the Waris Khan area on June 2 2015. He died two days later.
Mahmood was in-charge of the PIA cargo air freight unit (AFU) state warehouse at Benazir Bhutto International Airport in 2015 and was the person that took official custody of the currency recovered from Ayyan in March 2015.
The inspector’s wife had told the police that Mahmood told her that he was under a lot of pressure due to his association with the high-profile case. She claimed that her husband told her that some men, who she could not identify, had been telling him to make false entries in the official record to protect Ayyan or weaken the case against her.
She said Mahmood had told her that the callers had threatened to kill him if he failed to follow their instructions.
The case is adjourned till Tuesday.
