Residents protest against prolonged power outages

PESHAWAR – The residents of Tehkal and its surrounding areas took to roads to protest excessive and unscheduled electricity loadshedding in the provincial metropolis and blocked main university road for hours.
The protesters also besieged a Wapda Circle office in Defence Colony and chanted full-throated slogans against Pesco and the government. A huge contingent of police was deployed and barbed wire was put around the Wapda office.
The infuriated locals lamented that they were facing 18 hours long breakdown daily despite the scorching hot weather, which was injustice and beyond tolerance. Talking on the occasion, elders of Tehkal Bala and Tehkal Payan said that Pesco has started step-motherly attitude with them. “Earlier, we were attached to Defence area grad station, but now the Pesco officials deceived us and attached our electricity line with Regi, which is available mere five to six hours in 24 hours,” they added.
They said that they were compelled on protest demonstrations, because women and children in their homes were facing immense difficulties, adding that they were also facing acute shortage of safe drinking water. They also lamented that the Pesco officials were putting extra burden of load shedding upon them and giving ease to bureaucrats and elate-class living in posh areas, in spite of high electricity theft, whereas we are regularly paying huge utility bills but despite a rare electricity facility. Due to the closure of the busiest university road, long queues of vehicles were observed due to which both motorists and commuters were confronted with immense difficulties.
Later on, Pesco officials at its circle office hold negotiations with leaders of the protestors and assured to end the unscheduled breakdown. The protestors gathered in front of Pesco circle office peacefully dispersed and joined those who were blocked the main road, but later on they were also convinced to end their protest. They warned the Pesco officials that if the excessive loadshedding was not ended in their respective areas then they would come more hardened and the responsibility would be on the government.
