PESHAWAR -
A popular Pashto actress suffered burns in an acid attack in Nowshera town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, police said.
Eighteen-year-old Bushra – popular for her film, television and theatre appearances – was attacked while asleep at her house in the early hours.
Doctors at Lady Reading Hospital said the actress had suffered 33 per cent burn injuries on her face and shoulder, but was in stable condition.
Bushra’s family filed a complaint against local drama producer Shaukat Khan.
A police official Sultan Khan confirmed the incident, saying Bushra’s family claimed there were ongoing disagreements between the actress and the producer over her unpaid wages. Another police officer Behroz Khan added an arrest warrant had been issued for Shaukat Khan.
"A man scaled the walls of our house in the wee hours, threw acid on my sister and fled," Bushra's brother Pervez Khan said. He also claimed producer Shaukat Khan was unhappy over her sister’s refusal to marry him.
Reports said the actress was attacked at around 03:00 am, and her mother and brother also got minor injuries when they were tried to protect her. Bushra was immediately ferried to Lady Reading Hospital’s intensive care unit and later moved to another hospital.
Acid attacks are becoming frequent in the country with scores of such assaults taking place each year.
