Man chops off wife’s foot in Swat

SWAT - In another incident of violence against women, a man chopped off foot of his 20-year-old wife at Manglawar area of Swat Valley.
According to details, one Gowhar Ali chopped off the right foot of his spouse Shabnam on October 5. The wounded Shabnam reached Swat Women Jirga Headquarters Saidu Sharif the other day where she shared her painful story with the media persons.
According to Shabnam, on Octtober 5, her husband Gowhar Ali got furious when his mother told him something against her. She said that instead of taking her version to clarify the issue, Gowhar first slapped her and then chopped off her foot with an axe. Shabnam said that she was shifted to a hospital in critical condition where doctors suggested cutting off her foot completely.
Talking to The Nation, Shabnum’s brother Ameer Shah, who is a taxi driver, said that it is a very painful incident and they cannot afford her treatment. “My sister’s medical treatment will cost Rs0.2 million and we cannot afford this amount owing to our weak financial position,” he added. He appealed to the government to help him in medical treatment of his sister.
Tabbassum Adnan, Head of Swat Women Jirga, while condemning the incident, said that women were brutally targeted in Swat. She said that a few days back a man chopped off his wife’s nose. “These brutalities against women are unacceptable and voice would be raised against the violence at every forum,” she added.
