Our Staff Reporter SIALKOT - The local socio-political circles have appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister to take immediate drastic steps for complete overhauling of Technical Education and Vocational Authority (Tevta). They are of the view that Tevta has failed to produce skilled and semi-skilled workforce for the industrial sector and has become white elephant as the organisation is being running a man on his personal like and disliking. On the other hand, there is a dire need for the appointment of capable persons for running the Tevta instead of incapable persons working on contract basis. At present the Tevta was under the clutches of incapable and blue-eyed persons who have ruined the spirit of the authority. All these contractual people are working merely to make money and least bother to make the organisation produce market-oriented workforce. It was very unfortunate that readymade garment department was established in a vocational institute and equipped with machinery but due to unknown reason this department is non-operational and machinery of the department had become rusty and teacher concerned reluctant to perform ther duty. Why the readymade garment department was not operational in past six to seven year and the female students were deprived of admission? Why the local authorities of Tevta were ignoring this malpractice? Sialkot is totally export-oriented city and nucleus of cottage industry that earning $1.25 billion through export of sports goods, surgical instruments and sportswear. Sialkot is a city with growing sportswear industry exporting to top brand and foreign buyers globally and the non-operational readymade garments department was a serious blow to the industry. Under the circumstance there was an immediate need of holding probe into the affair and to trace out the lady teacher as well as persons involved in this slackness should be taken to task to facilitate the business community and interested female students. There was also an urgent need of launching new short and long term vocational training programme for the students instead of beautician and embroidery etc. The current era is an epoch of modernism and there was need of initiating new courses enabling the female students to cope with the changing trends and earn their livelihood in a respectable way. At present exporters and manufacturers of Sialkot were confronting with multifarious problems due to the acute shortage of skilled and semi skilled labour and the Tevta has failed to produce skilled labour in accordance with the industrial need of Sialkot resultantly the business community was constantly showing dissatisfaction over the performance of Tevta. They said that Commerce Degree College for women was showing excellent performance since its establishment there was a need expanding sphere of college because over 500 girl students are obtaining commerce education. The vocational college should be shifted to some other place because the number of students was very thin and whole building should be handed over to Commerce College to facilitate the students.
