UNHCR gives laptops to Afghan students at Peshawar varsity

PESHAWAR - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Peshawar office, donated 175 mini-laptops to University of Peshawar. The UN refugees agency will further distribute lap-tops among various departments and two affiliated schools of the university where the Afghan students are enrolled. The laptops have been donated as a goodwill gesture and as recognition of University of Peshawar services, which it is extending to students from Afghanistan over the past three decades, the university spokesman said. The handing over ceremony of laptops took place at the UNHCR site office (warehouse) in Pabbi, Peshawar, where Nasir Azam Sahibzada, Programme officer UNHCR Peshawar handed over the laptops to Prof. Dr. Babar Shah, of Department of Regional Study University of Peshawar, who was nominee of the Vice Chancellor for the ceremony. In his address on the occasion, the Programme Officer UNHCR said that Pakistan is still host to about 1.7 million registered Afghan refugees and a number of Afghan students are still studying in Pakistanis educational institutions.The official apprised that a number of initiatives have been taken by UNHCR including provision of DAFI (Albert Einstein German Scholarship) over the past 20 years to Afghan students studying in Pakistani institutions to help rebuild their country.The University of Peshawar has hosted hundreds of Afghan refugee students in past and currently is providing education to a number of Afghan students in various disciplines, said Prof. Dr. Babar Shah on the occasion.
