Protest against police 'atrocities'

PESHAWAR Different forums and unions of journalists in Peshawar on Saturday staged a protest demonstration against Peshawar Police for torturing a media person and keeping him in illegal custody. The protestors demanded that the Station House Officer (SHO) of Bhana Mari Police Station Abidur Rahman should be suspended from his duties without any delay and an impartial inquiry should be held against the police officer him for torturing a journalist Umair Yasir. The participants of organisations of media persons including Peshawar Press Club (PPC), Khyber Union of Journalists (KUJ), Photo Journalists Forum (PJF) and Sports Writers Association (SWA) staged the protest demonstration at the premises of PPC and demanded of the federal and provincial governments to take substantial steps against the said police officer. Earlier, an emergency meeting was called, wherein through a joint resolution the violence carried out against the journalist as well as five other incidents of violence against journalists at various times in the provincial metropolitan was resented. The meeting was attended by PPC President Shamim Shahid, Javid Aziz Khan, Sultan Siddique from KUJ, SWA President Azmatullah and other office-bearers and members of the forums. The meeting demanded of Amir Haider Khan Hoti and Interior Minister Rahman Malik to take notice of the involvement of police personnel in unlawful violence. It was unanimously decided if an immediate action against the SHO Bhana Mari Police Station was not taken then on April 27 a strategy would be chalked out country-wide protest demonstrations. Later, a two-member committee was constituted including Shamim Shahid and Javid Aziz Khan that will take the issue with relevant authorities for thwarting such kinds of happenings in future.
