Eid Miladun Nabi off for cellular services

ISLAMABAD - Following the instructions of the Interior Ministry, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued notification to suspend cellular services on Eid Miladun Nabi in various cities, excluding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. The services will be blocked in 51 cities of Punjab, 7 districts of Sindh and in Quetta from 7 am to 10 pm. It seems that this is the only way left with the Interior Ministry to control terrorism in the country, an official said.Rehman Malik has invented the unique way of making security arrangement on special occasions by suspending cellular services, leaving no choice for the people but to remain at home due to disconnection. The ban violates the licensing agreement between the PTA and telecom companies, besides incurring a loss of Rs1 billion per day to service providers. The cellular services are suspended to prevent terrorists from using cellular simsas detonators but it caused serious communication problems for the people. The practice first introduced on Eidul Fitr last year and now has become a convention for every occasion. Talking to the media men at Nadra headquarters, Malik said he had asked mobile phone companies to ensure biometric system at their franchise by February 28, to block issuance of illegal sims. He said a letter would be written to telecom companies to arrange equipment at their franchises to put a check on illegal connections.
