CPEC will be a symbol of good governance, transparency: Chinese minister

Islamabad: China, Pakistan will work together to ensure transparency in the implementation of economic corridor project and to make it a symbol of good governance and transparency, said Chinese Vice Minister National Bureau of Corruption Prevention Liu Jianchao.

In this connection, he said the two sides will soon sign a memorandum of understanding to check and control all kinds of corruption or misappropriation in bilateral deals.

The Minister was briefing the newsmen here about his meetings with Pakistani officials and Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and ongoing anti-corruption campaign in his country. Terming the CPEC as most important project in their bilateral relationship, he said they need to make all possible efforts for its complete success. Strict vigilance would be applied in execution of all the projects of CPEC, he added.

Liu who earlier had served his country as Vice Foreign Minister and took the new assignment about two months back said the efforts to curb all sorts of corruption in China have proved very successful. For this, he gave the credit to top leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

About the CEPC, he further said if there would be any complaint of misappropriation of fund relating to this mega project, it would be investigated and the persons found responsible for corruption will be death with strictly, under the proposed MoU.

The CPEC, he hoped will be implemented in clean and transparent manner, making it a symbol of good governance. Under the law, he said it has been made forbidden for the Chinese companies to get themselves involved in any corrupt practice in any manner.. Both sides, he added will work closely to prevent, detect and control all sorts of corruption.

Liu Jianchao further said the leadership of the two countries attached great importance to CPEC and wanted to make it successful at all cost. This project will immensely contribute to peace and development not only in the two countries, but whole of the region. It is a pilot project of one road, one belt’s imitative of the Chinese government.

The Minister, while praising high the Sino-Pak friendship, said that they are looking forward to have close cooperation in fighting out corruption, making their bilateral deals best for their people.

Liu Jianchao termed the corruption a great threat to global security, peace and socio-economic development. His country, he said has adopted a policy of zero tolerance policy against corruption. China has investigated around 230,000 government officials, who were all members of the ruling Communist Party of China and almost 95 per cent of those investigated were punished.

There are 150 officials above the level of Vice Ministers or Vice Governors who were brought to book for committing corrupt practices. There are about 600 corrupt Chinese officials who had fled abroad and the government succeeded to bring them back and punished them under the law. They succeeded to control the spread of this menace, hoping it be would soon put to an end.

Corruption, he said is not only a threat to a nation but it is a global hazard and they must curb it through all possible means. Liu Jianchao said Pakistan is my second home and this is his fourth visit to this country. He wished that the two brotherly countries further deepen their strategic cooperation in all fields of common interest.
