Aizaz briefs friendly countries envoys over drone strike

ISLAMABAD - Secretary Foreign Affairs Aizaz Chaudhry yesterday met ambassadors of friendly countries and took them into confidence over prevailed situation after the recent US drone attack.

In separate meetings with ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, China, and Turkey, Chaudhry presented Pakistan’s case before the friendly nations, officials said.

The envoys, officials said, were told that the US’ approach of using force at will affect the efforts of Pakistan, China and others for long-lasting peace in Afghanistan

Chaudhry is understood to have sought diplomatic help from the friendly countries to convince the US against violating Pakistan’s sovereignty. Officials said Islamabad’s commitment to eliminate terrorism was also reiterated during the meetings.

Later yesterday, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz received Adam Shareef Umar, Defence Minister of Maldives, at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Adviser said that Pakistan attached high importance to its relations with the Maldives which were characterized by cordiality, mutual respect and commonality of interest.

Aziz expressed his hope that the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to the Maldives in July, 2016 on the occasion of the National Day of Maldives, will help provide further impetus to the bilateral relations.

The two sides expressed satisfaction at the overall trajectory of Pak-Maldives relations and reaffirmed their resolve for further strengthening these ties, said an official statement.
