Palm trees worth Rs1.5b 'wasted

ISLAMABAD (Online) The Special Committee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was told Thursday that the palm trees worth Rs1.5 billion, imported during Benazir Bhuttos govt, were destroyed because of poor planning. The committee held a meeting, with Zahid Hamid in the chair, at the Parliament House to review audit reports in respect of the Cabinet Division and the ministries of Environment, Commerce and Food and Agriculture for the year 1992-93 and 2001-02. Had the project, aimed at producing palm oil, been taken seriously and monitored in a transparent manner, Pakistan would have become the largest palm oil producer in the world, the audit officials said. These trees were planted in the coastal areas of Thatta and Badin, covering 600 acres of land, but no arrangements were made to look after the plantations. On the issue concerning possession of the federal governments land, the special committee issued directives recovering 3,000 acres of land from the occupation of the Sindh government in Karachi and sought a report within two months. The audit authorities told the lawmakers that two CDA officials had inflicted a loss of Rs154,000 to the national exchequer through acceptance of wrong bidding. Zahid Hamid directed them for registration of a case against the former officers.
